PLANT GENOMICS

 

The Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences in the College of Agriculture at Auburn University, in cooperation with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville, AL is seeking applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor – Plant Genomics.  This faculty position will be a nine-month, tenure-track position with a 20% teaching and 80% research appointment at Auburn University and a faculty investigator with HudsonAlpha.  The individual in this position will be a member of the faculty in the Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences in the College of Agriculture at Auburn University however the position location will be in Huntsville, Alabama at the  HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. The projected start date is June 1, 2019.

Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized program that will advance current understanding and application of genomics to crop genetics and breeding for improved plants (agronomic, horticultural) grown in Alabama. They will provide a crucial interface between the HudsonAlpha Institute’s plant genomics and Auburn University’s plant breeding/genetics programs to enable cross-collaboration and improved scientific output of both institutions. Other focus and interests could include utilizing genomic tools to evaluate different plant species for resistant and/or tolerance to herbicides or genetic manipulation of crops grown for improved water use efficiency. The individual in this position would be expected to utilize advanced genetic tools and cooperate with private sector scientists.

The individual in this position will also be expected to conduct research to identify novel mechanisms for plant breeding and genetic modification to overcome abiotic and/or biotic constraints on plant health and crop production including, but not limited to: heat stress, drought stress, herbicide resistance, improved yield quality and quantity, and/or other environmental stressors.  Candidates with knowledge of applying genomics to plant breeding and crop improvement are encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to have strong genetic and statistical backgrounds and genomics training applicable to applied plant genomics. Of particular interest are those with experience with CRISPR and other gene editing technologies.   

Teaching responsibilities are 3-4 hours of course credit per academic year, which would include teaching a graduate level course in plant genomics and genomic tools.  The successful candidate will also be expected to mentor and advise graduate students in plant genetics/genomics.  As a member of the College of Agriculture and the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, this position will also participate in service and outreach activities. 

The individual will collaborate with scientists in the department, college, university, the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and colleagues from other land grant institutions. There will also be an expectation for collaboration with private industry.   

Qualifications:  Minimum qualifications include: 1) an earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution in plant/crop genomics plus a minimum of two (2) years in a post-doctoral position(s) or equivalent experience, at the time employment begins; 2) experience, training and knowledge of traditional and advanced methodologies in genomics, and 3) documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative research in plant/crop genomics. The successful candidate must possess excellent written and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with diverse audiences. The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time of appointment and to continue working legally for the employment term. Applicants with previous or current experience at the rank of assistant or associate professor in a tenure-track system, or equivalent experience in private sector plant genomics are expected to demonstrate evidence of prior extramural funding success.
