  Biomedical Engineering Program (BME) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the top ranked programs in China. Based on its strength in both research and education, the BME program at SJTU is one of the few programs designated by Shanghai Educational Commission as leading disciplines with considerable funding.

  BME at SJTU currently has more than 125 primary faculty members, including 28 full professors and 31 associate professors. Our faculty members have received numerous accolades and honors, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering, One-Thousand Talent National Programs, Outstanding Young Scientists by the National Science Foundation and the esteemed Chang Jiang Distinguished Professorship Program of Ministry of Education. Our faculty members have also been honored by major professional societies as elected fellows, such as AAAS, ASME, AIMBE, and SPIE, and hold editorships or editorial board memberships of major scientific journals, including Nanomedicine, Stroke, Journal of Cytometry Part A, and several IEEE Transactions. There are 187 undergraduate students and 191 graduate students registered in the BME program. Our research programs are well funded both from National Funding Agencies, including the highly competitive and prestigious 973 Program and industrial partners with an annual amount exceeding 70 million RMB. BME program has also established broad interdisciplinary research centers with 13 affiliated clinical centers, such as the nationally top ranked Ruijin Hospital, through its Med-X Institute located on the Xuhui Campus in downtown Shanghai.

  To further support the research and development in its various programs, both the university and the School of BME have recently decided to enhance its Postdoctoral Fellows Program with nationally competitive stipends. Sign-up bonus is also provided by BME to exceptional candidates on a competitive basis. Postdoctoral fellows can choose to work with any qualified mentors in the following sub-disciplines: Biomedical Instrumentation, Neuroscience and Engineering, Medical Imaging and Informatics, Biomedical Robotics, Nano-Biomaterials, Systems Biology and Medicine, and Biological Sciences and Diseases. Upon completion, exceptional accomplishment will receive awards selected by the Administrative Committee based on merits.

Terms and Responsibilities:

  Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be initially appointed for a 3 year term with a rigorous review at the end of the second year. A second 3 year term can be granted after merit review and mutual agreement. Postdoctoral fellows with significant accomplishment during their tenure will be encouraged to apply for faculty positions at SJTU with preference. Fellows are encouraged to apply external grants and participate in teaching on a voluntary basis with the approval of their perspective mentors. Fellows are also encouraged to attend professional meetings in their perspective field and partial travel awards are available on a competitive basis.

  Subsidized housing is available to qualified fellows either in dormitories for singles or apartment units for families. Health insurance and other benefits will be provided according to the policies of the university. Fellows can also choose to join the Worker’s Union that provides additional benefits for its members.

Requirements:

  Applicants should have received a PhD or D. Sc in related research disciplines, such as biology, engineering, medicine or materials, within 5 years of reception. Applicants with previous postdoctoral experience are also welcome and those from top ranked research/education institutions are particularly encouraged to apply. Qualified candidates will be reviewed by the Administrative Board and interested candidates are strongly advised to contact their perspective meteors for guidance before submitting their applications. Scientific excellence and/or research potential are the major criteria for success.
