Assistant Professor of Weed Ecology and Management

Position: Assistant Professor-Weed Ecology and Management, Tenure track position; 75% Research: 25% Teaching. Starting Date: August 2019 or as negotiated. Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to develop an externally funded, high impact research program focused on weed ecology that addresses weed management problems in agricultural production systems important to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region. Research should focus on developing weed management strategies that are informed by ecological principles for current and emerging weeds and production systems. Pennsylvania is comprised of diverse agricultural systems that support grain, forage, vegetable, and fruit industries in addition to dairy, beef and poultry animal production industries. Pennsylvania also supports a rapidly growing organic sector and is a national leader in conservation tillage practices. Teaching responsibilities include: an undergraduate weed management course that focuses on weed ecology and applied aspects of weed control and management; and an undergraduate plant ecology course. Candidates will be evaluated on their potential for publishing high impact work, obtaining extramural funding, teaching excellence and collaboration with multi-disciplinary research teams to develop effective weed management systems that support agricultural productivity while protecting the environment and contribute to the profitability of agricultural production systems. Candidates are expected to mentor and advise graduate students. Communication, creative leadership, congeniality, and the ability to work cooperatively among a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, industry and agency groups is essential in our department and university. Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Weed Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, Agroecology, Plant Biology, or a closely related discipline and are expected to have research experience in weed-crop interactions, weed population dynamics, population genetics, herbicide-weed interactions and/or precision agriculture. All degree requirements must be completed by the appointment date. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills as well as demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and publishing.
