Primary Purpose
Idaho State University and the Department of Biological Sciences invite applications for an Assistant Professor of Ecological Genomics to begin August 2019. This position is linked to a recently awarded National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Research Infrastructure Improvement Program grant (“GEM3”; www.idahogem3.org), which will facilitate transdisciplinary research to uncover the fundamental genetic, environmental, social, and policy mechanisms connected to the adaptive capacity of two iconic organisms in Idaho: sagebrush and rainbow trout.

We seek applicants whose research interests are focused on ecological questions of global interests and importance, applying genomic approaches to some combination of environmental change, land use change and decision-making, water management and decision-making, and ecological systems across a range of scales. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the focal species or related systems. In addition, we are particularly interested in applicants who can contribute to the diversity of our academic community through their research, teaching, and service, and who have demonstrated experience working with tribal stakeholders.

The successful candidate will have a research-intensive appointment with a 1:1 teaching load, potentially including organic evolution, genetics, a plant course, or a course in his or her area of expertise. The person hired will be expected to collaborate on GEM3 grant activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach and provide service to the university and community
  • Advise graduate and undergraduate students
  • Submit extramural grant proposals
  • Participate in and lead GEM3 research and service activities

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Ph.D. (by August 2019) in a relevant field, including but not limited to biology, ecology, genetics, or molecular biology.
  • Demonstrated record of publication indicative of the potential to establish and maintain a productive research program
  • Expertise in genomics and bioinformatics techniques
  • Ability to articulate a research agenda and identify potential funding sources to support such research
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work within a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postdoctoral research experience
  • Experience working with focal species (sagebrush, trout) or related systems
  • Success in attracting extramural research funding
  • Teaching experience in genomics
  • Ability to recruit and work with a student body from diverse backgrounds
  • A background that enhances diversity of the Department’s faculty
