The metabolic syndrome constellates a group of components that identify obese patients at risk for developing cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus type 2. Additionally, the presence of a low-grade chronic inflammatory state in these patients has been linked to diseases such as atherosclerosis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the latter being viewed as the liver manifestation of the metabolic syndrome. Our research aim is to provide novel insight into the mechanisms at the basis of this metabolic inflammatory response and, when possible, validate our findings in the clinic. Furthermore, we also attempt to apply our findings to other related disorders.
