Postdoctoral Research Associate

Cancer Research – Dr. Janet Houghton’s Laboratory

Department of Oncology, Division of Drug Discovery, Southern Research, Birmingham, AL

Postdoctoral Research Associate position available immediately in drug discovery and mechanism-based cancer research in the Department of Oncology, Division of Drug Discovery, at Southern Research.  Research involves small molecule targeting of constitutively expressed oncogenes, and/or key downstream targets or regulators of their aberrant proliferative phenotype, together with detailed mechanistic studies based in cancer drug discovery.  We have identified key genes that regulate cell death in the HH-GLI and KRAS-GLI signaling axes, in the regulation of GLI-dependent transcription and in DNA replication licensing. Colon cancer is the model currently under investigation, with opportunities to extrapolate to other cancer types based on the malignant phenotype, oncogenic KRAS and constitutively activated GLI.  Mechanism-based research areas important for this position include detailed understanding and technical experience in mechanisms of DNA replication licensing, DNA damage and repair, transcriptional regulation, cell death, and/or drug discovery in the cancer field.  Expertise in molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and human cell culture techniques is required.

In addition to cancer biologists, Southern Research offers a dynamic and collaborative research environment with basic scientists in the fields of small molecule design, computational biology, synthetic chemistry, X-ray crystallography, and high-throughput screening, all contributory to the cancer drug discovery initiative.  Areas in cancer biology are focused in molecular oncology, immuno-oncology, and specific cancer types, while the Division of Drug Discovery offers unique opportunities for career development.  Southern Research Faculty have academic affiliations with the University of Alabama, Birmingham, with full access to seminars, Core Facilities, and activities within the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Successful candidates should possess the PhD degree in molecular biology, cell biology or relevant scientific discipline with experience in cancer related research, and be committed to the development of a dynamic, academic career in science.  PhD candidates obtaining their diploma in 2017 may be considered, however, the PhD must be awarded before employment can commence. Interested candidates should submit a CV, description of research interests, technical skills, past projects and publications, and contact information for three references.  Candidates should apply directly at Southern Research career portal ( https://goo.gl/6igL4l ), which also provides additional information on this program, and on the six Departments that comprise the Division of Drug Discovery.
