The Merck Early Discovery Neuroscience team is seeking a motivated and technically skilled in-vitro scientist with strong cell biology and biochemistry expertise to join our Boston-based Exploratory Discovery team. Candidates will be able to work independently, but will also be expected to proactively collaborate with colleagues across disciplines. Primary responsibilities include design and execution of in vitro experiments including establishing in vitro cell-based model systems, development of immunoassays and performing biochemical and analysis of tissues to support the identification and validation of novel targets to treat CNS diseases including neurodegenerative diseases. The candidate will be an active participant in the positive and critical scientific dialogue that supports our mission of target identification and validation.

The responsibilities of the Early Discovery Neuroscience team member include:

- Design, execute, interpret and report in vitro experiments.
- Develop, execute, troubleshoot and validate new cell assays, protocols and cell imaging methods.
- Collaborate to develop disease relevant cellular models using primary neurons and glia.
- Support in vivo studies, by participating in tissue collections and follow-up biochemical assays.
- Analyze, summarize and communicate data clearly and concisely to teams and stakeholders.
- Monitor, review and critically interpret published work to guide internal research.
- Collaborate with members from other functional areas, including medicinal chemistry, in vivo and in vitro pharmacology and translational sciences.
- Work with external academic, biotechnology, and contract research organizations

Qualifications

Education:

- BS/BA degree with a minimum 2 years of industry or academia experience, preferably in cell/molecular biology or neuroscience or a related subject area or a Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences

Required:

- Demonstrated ability to thrive independently and in a team environment.
- General knowledge of methods in molecular neuroscience
- Independently perform tissue and cellular protein/RNA preps, quantitative PCR, western blots, ELISA, and enzyme assays.
- Good understanding of in vitro cell-based assay development principles
- Strong data analysis skills including a practical knowledge of statistics.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including preparation of study reports, presentations and able to contribute to manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed scientific journals.

Preferred:

- Primary neuronal cell culture experience; organotypic brain slice culture a plus.
- Good understanding of assay development principles for high throughput screening.
- Ability to perform high content microscopy and quantitative image analysis on multiple platforms.
- Stable cell line generation, with some experience using Zinc Finger nuclease, TALEN or CRISPR methodology.
- Experience working with transgenic and experimental models of neurodegeneration.
- Record of innovative thinking to champion new ideas and solve problems.
- Experience with multiple therapeutic modalities (small molecule, antibody, peptide, siRNA).
