Position Summary

This scientific leadership role within Formulation and Delivery Technologies will be responsible for formulation design of novel formulations and evaluation of external technologies for delivery mRNA in a variety of contexts. 

The successful candidate will oversee aspects of the mRNA formulation design efforts in a dynamic and highly interdisciplinary environment.  Formulation and device application evaluations based on a strong materials science and engineering foundation are key attributes for the candidate in this position.  A breadth of knowledge of materials science, nanotechnologies for formulation design, nucleic acids and protein biologics, devices, drug delivery and general pharmaceutical product R&D is highly desirable.  The individual will balance internal effort with external initiatives to identify, organize and engage in collaborations based on emerging needs.  Ability to contribute to formulation design for pre-clinical and clinical programs is a key requirement.  Candidates must have a strong foundation in chemistry, materials science / engineering with a record of achieving technology development and research goals on aggressive timelines through effective collaboration with all stakeholders.  Experience integrating materials characterization, pre-clinical formulation work, toxicology and clinical feedback into robust dosage form candidates in a cross-functional setting is essential.  This position has significant visibility and potential for growth in a dynamic organization. 

Responsibilities

  • Identify and prepare novel formulations as part of cross-functional team
  • Interact closely with internal R&D groups and partners in conducting efficacy and Formulation evaluation/PK/PD/Tox studies
  • Manage external evaluations of formulation and device technologies in collaboration with internal stakeholders and the relevant parties at non-Moderna companies
  • Oversee work plans and their execution to provide clarity on fit of successful technologies with Moderna needs
  • Link with venture/partner formulation group and new venture lab to understand current and emerging initiatives requiring delivery solutions
  • Ability to manage in a matrix of scientists and engineers internally and externally
  • Maintain accountability for project success and results delivery
  • Contribute to scientific and strategy discussions to advance and enhance platforms and product candidates
  • Communicate research and development findings

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. with 4+ years of industry experience in formulation of various molecules including nucleic acids for in vivo delivery:  mRNA experience is preferred
  • Pharmaceutical formulation and characterization expertise from industry
  • Strong foundation in chemistry, materials science, bio-engineering, chemical engineering or related field
  • A track record of achievement in products, patents and publications
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, comfort with senior management interactions
  • Positive team building and teamwork skills:  Innate ability to influence, lead and inspire people, within function and beyond functional/company boundaries
