Responsibilities
The Automation and Protein Expression groups at the Lilly Biotechnology Center in San Diego are searching for an associate level (Bachelors or Masters) scientist with experience in liquid handling and protein expression. The focus of the work will be to support early drug discovery programs at the Lilly Biotechnology Center through work with mammalian cell based protein expression, purification and set up of high-throughput liquid handling processes.
  • Maintain mammalian cell lines, including expanding cultures, harvesting cells, and cryopreservation.
  • Use integrated liquid handling platforms to independently perform high-throughput transfections and antibody purifications.
  • Assist colleagues and vendors with process improvement efforts.
  • Interact closely with the antibody discovery, protein engineering and purification groups in San Diego and Indianapolis.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in biochemical sciences (biology, molecular biology, or similar disciplines).
  • At least 2 years of post-degree academic or industrial experience.
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.
Additional Skills/Preferences
  • Strong skills in tissue culture (aseptic technique).
  • Experience in the use of common automation equipment such as BioMek FX liquid handlers, reagent dispensers, and bioreactors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, work planning, data analysis and record keeping skills (with strong attention to detail).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team setting are essential.
  • Master's Degree in biochemical sciences (biochemistry, chemistry, or similar disciplines).
  • Method writing experience on liquid handling platforms and/or laboratory automation scheduling software.
  • Knowledge of protein purification techniques, a plus.
  • Experience with sample management, process development, VBA applications or database mining, a plus.
  • Experience with basic molecular biology techniques such as cloning, plasmid DNA preparation and characterization.
