Professor in Molecular Biochemistry

Field and Location: The Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine of the University of Oulu (http://www.oulu.fi/fbmm/) announces opening of a Professorship in Molecular Biochemistry. The position is located at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, whose mission is to perform internationally significant research and to deliver high-level undergraduate and post-graduate education in the fields of biochemistry and molecular medicine. The research carried out at the Faculty focuses currently on cell-extracellular matrix, protein science and cellular regulatory and metabolic networks and related diseases. The research is carried out in 14 research groups. The Faculty has about 200 employees and about half of them are from abroad. It is considered as an advantage if the applicant’s research is related to the above focus areas the Faculty.

Together with Biocenter Oulu (http://www.oulu.fi/biocenter/), the Faculty has put a great effort towards building a cutting-edge research infrastructure that includes state-of-the-art instrumentation for imaging, gene modified mice, X-ray crystallography and quantitative biochemistry. The Faculty has extensive collaborative national and international networks including Biocenter Finland and the ESFRI projects Instruct, EuroBioimaging and Infrafrontier. We also partner in EU-Biostruct-X, Marie Curie Renaltract ITN and organize EMBO workshops and other international symposia. The Faculty has a joint PhD degree program and a double MSc degree program with University of Ulm.

Required qualifications: A person appointed to the position of a professor must have a doctoral degree, high level scientific competence, and experience in leading scientific research ability to provide high-level research-based teaching and theses supervision. It is also expected that the person to be recruited has a good record in obtaining external funding and is able to participate in international co-operation projects in his/her field of expertise.

When evaluating the competency of an applicant the tenure track guidelines according to the University of Oulu are followed. The qualifications to considered are scientific publications and other research results with scientific value, patents, teaching experience and pedagogic training, ability to produce teaching material, other merits as a teacher, teaching demonstrations and supervised doctoral theses. Other factors to be taken into consideration are the activeness of the applicant in the international scientific community, academic work abroad and other international positions. The teaching languages at the Faculty are Finnish and English.

Salary: The basic salary is based on the demand level chart 8-10 for the teaching and research staff of Finnish Universities. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3 % of the basic salary level for the post.
